Have you ever wondered what Osteopathic Remedial Massage is? Our Osteopath Jewel is here to help us find out!
An osteopathic remedial massage is a massage that is given by one of our trained osteopaths. Osteopaths asses the whole body looking at your muscles, joints, bones, nerves, circulation, connective tissue and internal organs to help your body restore its health.
An Osteopath is a government registered allied health practitioner. To become an Osteopath, the practitioner needs to have undertaken a university degree where they study anatomy, physiology, pathology, general healthcare, diagnosis and osteopathic techniques, including massage.
Who can have Osteopathic Remedial Massage?
Several conditions would benefit from osteopathic remedial massage, such as:
- Pregnancy
- Swelling in joints
- Delayed onset muscle soreness from activities
- General tightness of muscles.
- People who work in a sedentary occupation such as desk workers who are sitting in prolonged positions for a long-time
- manual workers such as a nurse, hospitality workers and tradies would also benefit from osteopathic massages.
What happens during the appointment?
During your osteopathic remedial massage, your osteopath will go through a thorough case history and examination. This will allow them to not only look at your muscles but also your joints and overall posture. This way, they can see how your body functions as a whole. Your osteopath may use a range of neurological and musculoskeletal tests to diagnosis. This allows your osteopath to address the root of the problem and not just treat the symptoms. Once your osteopath has a diagnosis, they will start on your osteopathic massage. Soft tissue techniques or massage are used to reduce muscle tension, improve circulation, stimulate the lymphatic system and increase joint movement.
During your osteopathic massage, your practitioner will look not only where your tightness and pain is located, but also at other muscles and joints that could be contributing to the pain and tightness. Using this technique can help balance your overall postural alignment to reduce it from re-occurring. Osteopaths are also able to provide clients on movement and strength education to help address imbalances, causing the pain. If you feel like you still need some extra work on your joints, you can always book in for an osteopathic appointment to compliment the remedial massage. As the osteopathic appointment can be used to address joint function that is causing muscle fatigue or overload of your tight muscles.
