What is Cranial Osteopathy?

Cranial Osteopathy

Cranial Osteopathy is a subtle form of treatment, but how does it differ from other styles of Osteopathy? Here we discuss the Cranial Osteopathy treatment offered at Whole Body Health and Wellness.

Cranial Osteopathy, also referred to as Biodynamic Cranial Osteopathy, is a subtle form of Osteopathy that looks at the body as a whole and recognises the inter-related nature of all the systems within the body. Despite the name, Cranial Osteopaths do not just treat your head!

Osteopathic philosophy stems from the belief that humans function as a whole – one unit of body, mind and spirit where structure and function are directly related to, and reflective of one another. Furthermore, within each person, there is an inbuilt mechanism that enables the body to self-heal and self-regulate.

The philosophy recognises that our natural state of being is health and that the capacity to heal is inherent within all of us. The same forces that power our growth and development in the womb are also responsible for the repair and recovery of our cells later in life. The effects of these forces can be felt in all your body’s tissues as an underlying motion that provides you with energy, health and life.

Osteopathy aims to restore the body’s natural state

While our bodies are inherently healthy sometimes injury and illness disrupt our natural state resulting in imbalance, pain or discomfort. Osteopathic treatments aim to restore your body’s natural state of health by realigning and rebalancing your body as a whole.

Injuries and illnesses can restrict the underlying motion that provides you with energy, health and life. This results in physical and emotional strains being held in the body for weeks, months or even years.

With each new stress or strain, the body finds it harder to adapt and respond to the environment further increasing the risk of injury or illness. By supporting the health already present in your body, osteopaths help your body recover from injuries and restore its natural sense of balance.

What Qualification Will My Osteopath have?

In Australia, osteopaths complete a 4-5 year university degree and must be registered with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency).

What Does Cranial Osteopathy Feel Like?

Cranial Osteopathy is a very gentle technique that includes no manipulation. Light pressure is applied to different areas of the body to release strain or tension that may be compromising your health. Treatments are immensely relaxing and sometimes people even fall asleep! Some people are aware of different sensations during treatment while other people are unaware of anything happening during treatment. You may feel sensitivity, mild aching, or feeling of warmth and relaxation. People also often comment that they feel different when they get up at the end of treatment.
